KMG and Sinopec Review Progress of Joint Projects

During a working visit to Beijing (China), Chairman of the Management Board of KazMunayGas NC JSC Askhat Khassenov met with Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sinopec Group Hou Qijun.

Sinopec is KMG's strategic partner in the Berezovsky exploration project in the West Kazakhstan region. The project is being implemented on a 50/50 basis, with the exploration phase funded by the Chinese company.

According to the work plan, 2D seismic acquisition of 900 lin. km is scheduled to begin by the end of this year. As part of the minimum work program following the 2D seismic acquisition, 300 km2 of 3D seismic acquisition are also planned for more detailed planning before drilling the complex 7,000-meter ultra-deep well.

Sinopec also expressed interest in expanding cooperation on other KMG's exploration projects.

Moreover, the implementation status of the1.25 MMtpa polyethylene production plant project was reviewed. Currently, construction work is underway on two key process units – pyrolysis and polymerization. The first units of large-scale equipment have already been delivered to the site. The overall project progress exceeds 34%. All work is being carried out according to schedule.

It should be noted that China's largest chemical corporation Sinopec is applying its best practices to the implementation of one of the largest projects in Kazakhstan's manufacturing industry. The company's well‑developed trade and logistics infrastructure will ensure its future products have reliable access to the strategically important markets of Southeast Asia and China.

The discussion also covered the operations of the joint production venture KazakhOil Aktobe. As part of the developed oil production increase strategy, the task has been set to increase production volumes from 500 Kt to 800 Kt by 2028. Therefore, it is planned to implement modern geotechnical solutions, including drilling of new vertical, directional and horizontal wells, etc.

The possibilities of cooperation in Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technology were separately discussed. KazMunayGas expressed interest in establishing a joint working group to implement relevant projects utilizing Sinopec's expertise.
