KMG’s Head Discussed Progress on Joint Projects with Eni Leadership
23.06.2025
In Astana, Chair of the Management Board of NC KazMunayGas JSC (KMG), Askhat Khassenov, met with Luca Vignati, Upstream Director of Eni SpA’s Global Natural Resources Division.
The parties reviewed the current status of the North Caspian and Karachaganak projects, discussed the development of Kazakhstani personnel, progress on the hybrid power plant project, and opportunities to expand cooperation in geological exploration.
Addressing the plans for the full-scale development of the Kashagan field, A. Khassenov highlighted the importance of joint efforts to define and implement the necessary measures. Given KMG’s strategic goal to increase the share of Kazakhstani specialists within NCOC and KPO, he also emphasized the need to update the 2020-2025 Personnel Nationalisation Programme, extending its targets through 2030.
The discussion also focused on the ongoing construction of a 247 MW hybrid power plant in Zhanaozen, Mangystau Region. Approximately 800 jobs are expected to be created during the construction phase, with up to 70 permanent positions once the plant is operational. Commissioning of the solar power segment is scheduled for Q3 2025, with the gas and wind power units in 2026.
Geological exploration is identified as a promising new area of cooperation. Earlier this year, Eni participated in a KMG-hosted roadshow showcasing high-potential exploration projects. The proposed blocks are currently under evaluation.
For reference: In the first five months of 2025, oil production at Kashagan reached approximately 7.7 million tonnes, with a full-year target of 18 million tonnes. At Karachaganak, 4.8 million tonnes of oil were produced over the same period. Annual production targets for the field include 11.14 million tonnes of oil and 25.57 billion m³ of gas.
