The Atasыu–Alashankou Trunk Oil Pipeline Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary

Exactly two decades ago, the Atassu–Alashankou oil pipeline was put into operation. This is the first stage of the Kazakhstan–China trunk oil pipeline system, which has become one of the key infrastructure projects in the country’s history.

It was in July 2006 that the first batch of Kazakh oil was received at the Alashankou delivery and acceptance point.This event marked a new chapter in the development of the domestic oil industry, launching direct supplies of Kazakh hydrocarbons to one of the world’s largest energy markets—the People's Republic of China.

The Atasu-Alashankou oil pipeline route runs through four regions of Kazakhstan – Ulytau, Karaganda, Zhetissu and Abai, and then crosses the state border with China. Its length is 962.9km within the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan and 2.2km within the territory of the PRC. The pipeline transports oil from the West Kazakhstan, Aktobe and Kumkol fields, as well as Russian oil to China.

Since the start of operations, over 200MMt of oil have been transported via the Atassu–Alashankou trunk pipeline, and more than 100MMt via the Kenkiyak–Kumkol trunk pipeline.

Overall, this trunk oil pipeline system ensures reliable supplies of energy resources and strengthens the long‑term partnership between Kazakhstan and China.
